ARTICLE CORRECTIONS BY DIZZY HARRIS

Isaac Bell was not a native of England. He was born April 26, 1793 in Allegany County, PA. He was never in the English Navy. His family migrated to Lawrence County, Ohio where they built a grist mill and were in the timber business. Isaac enlisted for the War of 1812 at Gallopolis, Ohio and was with Captain John Russell' Company of the Ohio Militia. He was mustered out at Gallopolis. By Act of Congress Isaac received two land grants for his service in the War of 1812. 40 acres in 1850 and 120 acres in 1855. Isaac had previously purchased 400 acres, and I believe purchase was in 1848 from a Thomas G. Witten. In 1850 200 acres was given to son, James, and 150 acres to son, Benjamin. Benjamin's 150 acres was passed to his brother, David. Isaac maintained ownership of 50 acres until his death. I believe the log home is probably on the original 400 acres, though that is not certain. Isaac married Nancy Shrader Sept. 21, 1824 in Tazewell, VA. She was the daughter of David and Rhoda Nuckles Shrader. For some unknown mysterious reason Nancy's name appears as Sanders in the marriage records. It is unclear if Isaac actually built this log home or if it was built by one of his sons. Home was probably purchased by the Moore family from one of Isaac's grandsons and not a son as they were all deceased long before 1929. It was probably James W. Bell, son of David. David Bell is buried on Shinbrier Mountain in an unmarked grave and we do not know the exact location.

NANCY SHRADER MARRIAGE RECORD MYSTERY SOLVED

When Nancy Shrader married Isaac Bell on 21 September, 1824, in Tazewell Co., VA., her name was listed as Nancy Sanders. That was due to the fact that William Shannon had not recorded her name correctly. He had turned in his marriage records only once in five years. Marriages that were performed between 19 Feb., 1824 (James Jackson & Any-should be Amy Taber)to 16 Nov 1829 (Alexander Tomblinson & Polley Workman), were all sent in at once. In that one period there was several mistakes of names. Mary Shrader married Frances Tabor on 20 Oct., 1825, and her name was also recorded as Sanders. Mary was a first cousin to Nancy Shrader being the daughter of Henry Shrader, Sr., the brother of Nancy’s father, David “Dave” Shrader, Sr.

Log Home Died July 2015

All things die sooner or later. It was a wonderful piece of early Shinbrier history.

It had reached a state of near collapse and had to be put out of its misery.

Its legacy will live on in the many lives whose beginnings started here.
